Reading with your child.
Here is some advice about reading with your child, taken from Literacy, Home and School (Hannon, 1997).

Make sure that the atmosphere is happy and relaxed.
Let your child sit very close to you.
Talk to the child about the picture first.
Give your child plenty of time to read to you.
Give plenty praise for effort.
Don’t threaten to tell the teacher if your child does not read.
Don’t show anxiety about lack of interest.
Don’t make your child think that they are in competition with anyone else.
Don’t read with the television on.
