Why Phonics?
It is widely believed that being able to read is the most important skill that children will learn at school. Only when children are able to read, will they have access to the literature that will enable them to learn across the curriculum.
Phonics is a way of developing word recognition skills. This is the first part of becoming a fluent reader. You also need a good understanding of what you are reading. This is called comprehension. The better children are at recognising words, the more they can concentrate on the bigger picture and comprehend what is written.
