Phase 6
During phase 6, children become fluent readers and increasingly accurate spellers.
Many children will now be reading longer and less familiar texts. They will start to read to learn instead of learning to read.
When spelling, children will be taught about past tense and how to add suffixes (ing, ed, er, est, ful, ly, y, s, es). They will also be taught how to spell long words.
PARENT TOP TIP: When reading with your child, ask them questions about what is happening in the story to develop their comprehension skills. You could also point out to them where suffixes have been used, or when the writer is using past or present tense.
