Phase 5
In phase 5, children will learn new graphemes and alternative pronunciations for these and graphemes that they already know.
When spelling words, they will learn to choose the correct spelling for each sound in the word.
When reading, children will be encouraged to say a word without blending if they know it from sight. If not, they may be able to silently blend it in their head.
Graphemes to learn: ay (day), oy (boy), wh (when), ou (out), ie (tie), ea (eat), ir (girl), ue (blue), aw (saw), ph (photo), ew (new), oe (toe), au (Paul), a-e (sale), e-e (these), i-e (time), o-e (home), u-e (tube)
Graphemes with alternative phonemes: i (fin, find), ow (cow, blow), y (yes, by, very), o (hot, cold), c (cat, cent), g (got, giant)
Tricky words to learn in this phase: oh, their, people, Mr, Mrs, looked, called, asked, would, should, could
