Phase 2
In phase 2, children begin to look at phonics as a way of spelling and reading. It starts with a tried and tested approach of learning a selection of letters (see below). They will begin to blend and segment using these letters
By the end of the phase, children should be able to read some VC and CVC words and spell them. They will be introduced to some two-syllable words and simple captions (e.g. pat a dog). They will also learn to read some 'tricky' words that can not be read phonetically (the, to, go, no).
Phonemes and graphemes to learn in this phase: s (sit), a (ant), t (ten), p (pan), i (in), n (net), m (man), d (dog), g (go), o (on), c (cat), k (kick), ck (kick), e (end), u (up), r (run), h (hat), b (bat), f (fan), ff (huff), l (log), ll (fill), ss (mess)
PARENT TOP TIPS:
If you want to use a magnetic board to help your child with their spelling, remember to use lower case letters (a,b,c) as capital letters (A,B,C) will be confusing.
Remember to teach your child the sound that the letter makes and not the name of the letter.
